Come on men! Are you brave enough to do a Zuckerberg Viewpoint careers advice blog
Come on men! Are you brave enough to do a Zuckerberg In late 2016 two very high profile men resigned from demanding jobs for family reasons â" James Brayshaw and John Key. What followed â" and this might be a first in this part, was that men started to talk openly about their inability to have it all. Last year also saw Mark Zuckerberg, who made sure Facebookâs parental leave policy covered both women and men, take two months of parental leave following the birth of his daughter. Wouldnât it be great to see more men leading by example like this so that other male and female employees feel they can do the same without it negatively impacting their career? De-gendering gender diversity by offering and accepting equal parental leave and flexible working options without career consequences for both men and women seems to me like the next logical step to help to make real and lasting gender equality progress in the workplace. This starts with talking in terms of family-friendly rather than women-friendly policies. It includes encouraging and accepting the decision of more men to work flexibly, offering and accepting their decision to take paternity leave. More importantly, it requires acceptance without making assumptions about career motivations or applying unconscious or otherwise career consequences. If we can offer and accept men working flexibly and taking parental leave in equal numbers to women, we will also be supporting women who want to do the same. More working fathers with female partners will be able to provide the support required for them to return to work, and by becoming the norm and removing career consequences it will have a positive impact on female gender equality. Shared caring responsibilities would improve gender diversity In a recent survey of ours, 81 percent of respondents said shared parental leave and more shared responsibility associated with child rearing would help break down unconscious biases and improve gender diversity at work. Yet just 19 percent said their organisation offers parental leave for male employees on equal terms to female employees. In addition, the majority say men in their organisation rarely take or only take some of the parental leave theyâre entitled to. Why? 61 percent of men said itâs due to the financial impact whereas 42 percent of women said itâs because they may be viewed as less committed to their career. Flexible working is career-limiting for women Meanwhile respondents said opting to work flexibly is a career-limiting move for women more so than for men. The majority said less than five percent of men work flexibly at their organisation compared to between 21-40 percent of women. 96 percent of female respondents said agile and flexible working options are important to them compared to 86 percent of men. Other surveys support our findings. For instance, a 2016 CPA Australia report showed that many employees think working flexibly will have a negative impact on their career. The 2017 Modern Families Index found that twice the number of fathers compared to mothers believe flexible workers are viewed as less committed while more than double the number of fathers believe working flexibly will have a negative impact on their career. In addition, 47 percent of fathers agree they would like a less stressful job to reconcile work and home responsibilities. Fathers are therefore, according to the Index, âhaving to consider the same compromises women have had to for decades.â Meanwhile, a study by the Human Rights Commission found 27 percent of men experienced discrimination when requesting or taking parental leave or when they returned to work. Gender equality âenhances menâs lives as wellâ As well as offering and encouraging men to accept flexible working and equal parental leave, I believe we need more men involved in gender equality. Last year US gender expert Michael Kimmel visited Australia and spoke about how gender equality and better distributing the load at home and in the office could be the best thing to happen to men. In an interview with ABCâs Lateline he said, âWe also know that gender equality actually enhances mens lives as well: that its actually good for us in our relationships with our partners; good for us in our relationships with our children if we have them; good for us in our own health and well-being.â In short, having more gender-equal working options is a change worth investing in, and theres no time like the present. This International Womens Day, lets do our bit to pledge for gender parity in the workplace and #BeBoldForChange. High-Earning White Women Face Biggest Motherhood Penalty
High-Earning White Women Face Biggest 'Parenthood Penalty' Having youngsters is perhaps the greatest driver of the sexual orientation wage hole. Also, new exploration shows a few ladies have more salary on the line than others. As indicated by a report distributed in the American Sociological Review, the parenthood punishment for the most elevated winning, most gifted white ladies is a normal compensation loss of 10% per youngster, contrasted and a 4% decline for each kid for moms by and large. Fathers, in the mean time, appreciate a knock in pay of around 6% per kid. It's critical to note, nonetheless, that ladies at the lower end of the monetary range may feel their pay misfortune more intensely than wealthier white ladies, since they have less assets in the first place. Utilizing information from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which tracks the business data of in excess of 5,000 ladies over their lifetimes, the examination found that for high workers, removing time from the workforce impedes future increases in salary more than it accomplishes for lower workers. Since ladies in low-paying callings aren't seeing noteworthy pay builds year over year, removing time from the workforce to have and bring up kids doesn't hurt their future wages as much as a shorter timeframe off accomplishes for high workers. Understand More: Kids Killing Your Paycheck? Just If You're Female The outcomes point to the requirement for increasingly adaptable work environments and parental leave approaches. A great deal of ladies are getting driven into dropping out completely for a couple of years since they can't get a little leave toward the start or in light of the fact that they can't get enough adaptability, Paula England, human science educator at New York University and the lead scientist on the investigation, told Bloomberg. An ongoing report from Paid Leave for the United States (PL+US) found that only 13% of private segment representatives and 6% of low-wage laborers get paid family leave. As per Quartz, lesser gifted and repaid white ladies confronted a 4% to 7% wage finding per kid, while dark ladies by and large lost 3% to 4% of their wages. The examination didn't represent the racial dissimilarity.

Cover Letters Whats the Point
Cover Letters Whats the Point TweetIts easy to feel that cover letters are a waste of job seekers time. The resume tells everything the employer needs to know, so a letter is just redundant, right? I couldnt disagree more. Before I explain my opinion, let me suggest a change in how you think about cover letters. Stop thinking the cover letter is all about you. Its about the job. I may be exaggerating, but its in the service of a crucial point: A cover letter is not going to impress unless it shows that youve done some homework on the company, understand their culture and needs, understand the job theyre looking to fill and can relate your qualifications to these specifics. Most cover letters dont do this, so yours will stand out. Most people send out the same generic cover letter for every job opening and just insert the job title and company name an approach that misses the point. For really eye-opening cover letters, go a step further by preparing way in advance. Start a list of companies youre interested in, and start following and researching them through social media, Google Alerts and networking. When you eventually respond to a posting from one of these companies or contact them proactively youll be able to write a very impressive letter that shows you are a savvy individual who is highly motivated to work there. Am I crazy? Or do I have a point? (I realize these two options are not mutually exclusive.) Click here for more good reasons to use cover letters! Eight signs your interview went well
Eight signs your interview went well by Amber Rolfe Figuring out whether your interview went well isnât always easyâ¦Although there can be obvious signs that you impressed the interviewer, others can be hard to gauge. But whether itâs a sure-fire signal or a more subtle hint, there are many ways to tell whether an employer is seriously considering you.Weve already covered what to do when your interview goes badly and six reasons you didnt get the job, but here are eight signs your interview probably went well:You have an actual conversation If your interview felt more like a casual chat than a formal interrogation, your skills and experience probably arenât the only thing that clicked with the interviewer. Not only does it show that youâd fit in with their company culture, it also proves youâd have a good working dynamic if you got the job.So if you notice that your interview starts to focus less on the formalities, and more on what kind of films you like (see also: laughs at all your jokes) â" youâ re probably doing well. They give you positive affirmation This may seem obvious â" but if youâre focusing on getting your answers right, you might not be paying full attention to the interviewerâs reactions. And trust us, they mean a lot.Because whether itâs through their body language or how they respond to your answers â" you can often gauge how an interviewer feels about you just by looking at them. And if theyâre fully engaged and giving positive feedback â" you can be sure youâre on the right track.Just beware of the tell-tale âIâm only here because I have to beâ signs (e.g. uninterested silences, slouching, lack of eye contact, continuous clock watching). Theyâre making an effort to sell you the jobAlthough every interviewer will talk about what the role is about â" not everyone will make a real effort to spark your interest. So if you notice the interviewer is giving you a detailed explanation of what the job entails (including exactly what âyouâdâ be doing) â" whilst listing the perks and benefits of working for them, youâve probably made a good impression.Itâs an even better sign if they actively link back to how that matches your skills and interests. It means they want to make the position work for you â" not just any candidate. They include you in their future How can you tell if your (working) relationship has a future? Theyâll actually tell you where itâs going. If your interviewer talks about how theyâd use your expertise into their future projects, plans, and developments (and/or brings in other members of the team to discuss) â" itâs likely that youâre a top contender for the role. Not only does it show that they can see you adding value by working there, it also means youâve made a good enough impression to actually last. They introduce you to the rest of the team An invitation to meet the team is essentially a colleague trial run.Youâve impressed in the interview, and the recruiter wants to know if youâll interact well with the team before they make their final decision. So all you have to do is keep impressing, by being polite and friendly with everyone you meet. This is also the perfect opportunity for you to get a feel of the working environment. Something as simple as a tour of the office or a chat with your potential colleagues can often be enough to figure out if a workplace is really right for you.Eight signs an employer is not the one It runs over the scheduled time Letâs face it â" interviewers are busy people.Amongst interviews, appointments, meetings, and general tasks â" their free time is probably rare. This means that they have to stick to their schedules and allocated timeframesâ¦that is, unless itâs worth it.So if your interview runs over the scheduled running time, itâs almost always a positive sign. Not only do they want to learn more about you, they also donât mind sacrificing their time for it. They ask when you can start The key to fi guring out whether this question indicates your interview is going well is to focus on how itâs delivered. For example, if your interviewer quickly asks this in addition to a number of other generic questions â" theyâre probably just going through the motions. However, if they ask it alone, and follow up with other questions and comments about your availability â" it could be a sign that theyâre considering employing you (and are willing to work around your schedule if necessary). You get invited to a second interview Good news, they want to see you again. If youâre invited to a second interview there and then, you can be sure you did a good job â" especially if they ask you before the interviewâs even over. And although it might seem daunting to go through this process again, donât let nerves make you forget the positive. They already like you â" so just keep doing what youâre doing, and youâre bound to continue to impress.Second interview tips: What you need to kn ow Second interview questions and answersLooking to improve your interview technique? Risks Job Seekers Often Have To Take
Risks Job Seekers Often Have To Take . Looking for the perfect job is a daunting task we have to face. It takes a lot of time and effort to get hired by the company you want to work for. Our friends over at findmyworkspace.com share the 3 risks you need to take if you want to find the best job for you. We all know that finding and applying for a job is hard especially if you are still a fresh graduate. But even if you are not job seeking could still be tedious especially because you have to compete with a whole bunch of other job seekers who might be armed with better resumes and wider work experiences than you. However, thatâs no reason to be disheartened. If you let competition and fear get ahead of you, you will definitely miss out on a dream job and other opportunities that wouldâve been a great stepping stone towards the career you always wanted. Thatâs why when it comes to job seeking, it is important to take risks, and you need to show your potential employers that you have the right attitude. 1. Accepting a role thatâs âbeneathâ you Sometimes, it is hard to find a job opening that truly matches your educational background, skills, and experience. Searching and patiently waiting for the perfect job match is a luxury that most of us cannot afford. And thatâs the time when you should take this risk applying for a job position that is a step lower from your actual qualifications. This works well especially if you want to break into an industry that you always wanted to work for just think of it as your stepping stone. In due time, you might get considered for a higher position inside the company once a new opening needs to be filled in. Another dilemma that you could face might not be about the actual job role, but the stability of it. This could either be because the company is only offering the position on a temporary/contractual or part-time basis. If that is the case, what should you do? Again, even if the circumstances are not exactly how you want it to be, it is still best to take that opportunity while it is available. What is more, a temporary position can benefit your resume too. Temporary or part-time, it could still be a stepping stone towards the career you want. Either way, you still gain new skills, experiences, and forge professional relationships in the process. How you maximize that window of opportunity is all up to you. 2. Jumping into a different field People jump from one job to the other all the time, but going into a different industry is not a common route to take. It may be because some are already contented with their current field, while some are afraid to do the âjumpâ because it is harder for them to compete with all the other applicants who are already experienced in the field. Yet if you really need a change of working environment and line of work, then you must at least try to take that âjump.â You have to be honest about it though you must show your potential employer that even though your background is different, you are willing to adapt and learn new things about the industry. Itâs not always about the skill, but it is the attitude that can successfully draw you out from all the other applicants. 3. Considering a smaller salary Different companies have different rates, and if you came from a big-time industry, it might be hard for you to accept job offers that have a lower salary range from your previous position. Make sure to properly state your salary requirements, however, if it is your passion that drives you to take that job, then it would be prudent to consider that pay cut. This might apply if you are doing that âjumpâ towards a different field. Like they say, there are no shortcuts to success. You have to take risks and compromise whenever possible if you are aiming to be a competitive applicant in todayâs job market. Just remember that a job position is your ladder towards bigger and better things. About the Author: Gemma Reeves is a seasoned writer who enjoys creating helpful articles and interesting stories. Meditation vs. Medication
Contemplation versus Prescription Now and again individuals approach me how I get thoughts for blog entries. Extremely, the inquiry is how would I discover sufficient opportunity to tell everybody about everything that bugs me? For instance, here are photographs Ive been clutching for some time. Its a progression of the stupidest commitment photographs ever. Be that as it may, pause. Before you click Im going to reveal to you that they are really someones genuine commitment photographs. What's more, in the event that you thought it was too mean to even consider calling out David Dellifield for being a butt face to me, at that point you are most likely not going to like that Im connecting to genuine photographs to dis them. So on the off chance that you feel self important, dont click. Truly, however, I urge you to click. Since most importantly, these individuals preferred their photographs enough to let their picture taker put them on her blog. Yet additionally, these photographs are a piece of a pattern where individuals do totally inept, strange things for their commitment photographs, so they feel that they will have a unique, uncommon life. However, newsflash to all you love birds spending an excessive amount of cash on commitment photographs: You won't have even a customary life. Be that as it may, you will wish you did. You will long for a simple family life, and simple marriage, and a canine that is housetrained in any event, when youre gone the entire day. You won't get that. Nobody does. What's more, everybody needs it. So the commitment photograph pattern is horrendous. Awful. Furthermore, the end product to that pattern is the tablescape pattern. Maria Killam, who is extraordinary, and who chose all the hues for my home that I love, went to my home to visit and began discussing tablescapes. She said they are a colossal at the present time and I need them. Supposedly, they are tsotskes hung everywhere throughout the surfaces in ones house. They are courses of action of articles that couldn't withstand ordinary family life, for individuals who don't have a typical family life. Tablescapes look like wishscapes â" that is, a melange of garbage that somebody thinks communicates why they are uncommon. (Nation Living is brimming with this stuff, overrated New York uniquely designed furniture topped with ranch fixation poo to give a room a rich-however sensible feel.) The entire pattern stinks of fakery. Much the same as the arranged commitment photographs. I frequently jump on my ego trip about fakery. I get down on everybody about it since I think Im the sovereign of confessing all about everything. In any case, the individuals nearest to me can get down on me about my own fakery. For example, Ill use Xanax for my issues, however I cannot do Xanax constantly or Id be an opiate someone who is addicted. Furthermore, at any rate, I need to spare Xanax for when the Farmer needs sex and Im stuck, nestled into a ball. Dont reveal to me I shouldnt take a Xanax to engage in sexual relations, alright? Im still fun after only one pill, and I dont even know whether the Farmer can differentiate. Furthermore, dont advise me to contemplate rather, in light of the fact that the best thinking I ever do is when Im on Xanax. Time truly passes by quick that way. I can truly sit still. So Im attempting to conclude how to deal with my issues best: Meditation or prescription? I have attempted a wide scope of drug, yet I miss having a brain that races. Do you realize what number of blog entry thoughts I have in one day? Ten. Twenty on the off chance that you tally the awful ones. Its simply that Im too dispersed to even think about writing one consistently. Looking back, my hustling mind is a central explanation I moved from New York City to a ranch. Heres what I snapped a picture of the last time I went to New York City: Its me attempting to get visual harmony so I can think. I think I decided to have smoothness around me on a ranch so I can concentrate on the insanity in my mind. You can say this isn't practical, yet I think this is the way a great many people have wild achievement in their vocation. By leaving their mind alone wild. Its a decision. However, the individuals around me may be becoming ill of it. What's more, I have had enough remarks on this blog from kids whose guardians were insane for me to realize that no child needs a parent whose psyche is dashing about stuff that isn't the children. Be that as it may, its so difficult to quit any pretense of having a cerebrum that goes relentless through tirades and tirades and ten hours of work in a short time. Its difficult to surrender that to be a sedated, ordinary, kind, obliging, individual. What's more, presently, we complete the cycle. Since Im disclosing to you that I like being unique. Like the individuals in the commitment photographs. I dont truly need that; any individual who thinks they are exceptional is headed straight toward damnation. Since feeling unique is only an approach to abstain from doing the things that a great many people do to fix the issues that you have. One approach to get thoughts regarding how to do what others do to fix your issues is to discover a mentor. The New Yorker has an incredible article about how everybody needs instructing. Its a specialist expounding on how strange it is that specialists dont have mentors and what he does so as to discover one for himself. (I sincerely feel like the suggestion of the article is that, as most specialists, he has too large an inner self to get instructing, and what he truly needs is a composing mentor, since like most specialists, he needs to be extraordinary at everything.) In any case, the article is informational in that we each need a mentor so as to get what we need. He has great proof about that. What's more, I can see that when I mentor individuals its so natural to perceive what they ought to do, so I can see how I ought to have a mentor for myself, too. In the event that I were my own mentor, Id take a gander at the inconsistency between what I state I need and what Im doing. I state I need to be quiet, however what Im doing is getting worked up about commitment photographs and getting by connecting to stuff I loathe. This isn't generally the activity of somebody who needs to be quiet. I need to be quiet for my children however not all that quiet that an incredible remainder is exhausting. You should be thinking about what Im realizing in couples treatment. That is to say, we go there two times every week. We should get the hang of something, correct? What we are realizing is the means by which to quiet ourselves down at the time. The person is Don Ferguson, and he composed this book, and one of his claims to fame is couples who have a type of post-horrible pressure issue connected to them. I think we have that. Likely in the two of us. That is to say, the Farmer dealt with his folks ranch for a long time and afterward they gave their homestead to their girls kids rather than the Farmer. While he was all the while dealing with the homestead. I think that is an indication that he possesses had a hard energy for quite a while. In this way, in our treatment, we figure out how to quiet ourselves down in the center of whatever we are doing. And keeping in mind that I like to believe that the Farmer is sincerely hindered and Im simply going to couples treatment for him to get his crap together, in all actuality I have a ton of similar issues he does. One of which is that I can get worked up about anything. Since I think its intriguing. Be that as it may, I should have the option to stop it rapidly if the individuals around me dont like it. So I am picking contemplation over medicine. I like having the option to quiet down for individuals I love, yet to be not quiet for me. I have had my head hustling for such a long time that its kind of my usual range of familiarity.

I Stopped Buying Overpriced Salads and Then This Happened
I Stopped Buying Overpriced Salads and Then This Happened The plight of millennials is a hot topic these days. If its not our fixation with social media and self-gratifying gadgets, its our seemingly apathetic approach to adult responsibilities. Mortgages, parenthood and job longevity? Ha ha. And then, my word, what about those spending habits? How rash! Splashing cash without a real care in the world (or career for that matter). Wanting this and that we cant afford it but well take it; paying for it later along with that hefty student loan and credit card debt (best gap year EVER). According to a range of reports and experts, it would appear were all financially doomed; every last one of us selfie-taking budget-breaking Gen Y-ers. Theres an SBS article doing the rounds at the moment, entitled I Stopped Eating Smashed Avocado and Now I Own a Castle. Its a really entertaining read in response to another article by The Australian which highlights (and totally generalises) the ill-ordered priorities of brunch-obsessed millennials. The messages (while not totally literal in either castle or house?) are just as poignant as they are comedic. Looking past the sarcasm and stereotypes (I know several twenty-somethings with home loans, sturdy jobs and children), what can we take away from both reads? Splashing cash on unnecessary items is causing millennials more money troubles than many would care to admit. Such ignorance to the bigger picture manifests neatly in our extravagant dining behaviours, which we gloat about online (my eggs are better than yours). But is regular weekend brunching really to blame for our monetary misfortunes, or is it just the social scapegoat for its slightly older and more boring cousin, known as lavish weekday lunching? Lets talk about food We need it to live Consuming it brings us joy Most singular items are within our immediate price range It makes for great daily Instagram content And, it can also be the perfect recipe for disaster. For want of trying to defend the brunching phenomenon Im inclined to engage in from time to time, I want to turn your attention to what I see as a far more harmful habit, also guilty of robbing our hip-pocket. That is, the whole buying food out every day thing, instead of bringing it from home. Yes, Im talking about spending 5 times as much money as we should be on vegetables, fruit, caffeinated milk, eggs, yoghurt, porridge, muesli bars, meat and bread just to have someone hand it to us over a counter in a paper bag or cup tray to take back to the office. The real millennial monster isnt smashed avo, its overpriced salads (5 times a week) When we were kids, bringing a packed lunch every day was normal (at my school anyway). Inside a brightly coloured lunch box thered be a sandwich waiting for us, alongside some fruit, a yoghurt and maybe some cheese strings or a biscuit if we were lucky. Our pocket money was used for a new game, clothes or kept in the piggy bank for later; we certainly werent spending it on SALAD! Somewhere along the line things changed. It happened around the time we started earning a real salary and, instead of fulfilling our childhood dreams by jam-packing snap-lock bags full of anything we want from our pantries, we opted to do away with the lunchbox altogether and splurge on fast food every day; a brand new kind of freedom altogether. Its just what everyone in the office does! I think our younger selves would have trouble digesting the absurdity of this! Some simple maths When you consider the premium paid for packaging, plastic wrappers and pre-prepared food, its safe to say that buying lunch from a cafe or outlet every day is an unnecessary expense. Reading the aforementioned article on exorbitant brunching behaviours inspired me to do a bit of simple arithmetic (yet another thing my child self would struggle to swallow voluntary maths, youve got to be joking). So, instead of dangling the comfortable retirement carrot yet again (which millennials clearly dont respond to), I thought Id see what real luxury might look like now, if we were to cut back on some of our mundane weekday food buys for a year. I stopped buying a coffee every day and now I Own an Apple Ipad Pro! At £2.50 a pop, buying a coffee 230 days of the year amounts to £575 Its a fair chunk of money considering there are a million and one ways to make your own coffee for cheaper. I stopped buying two coffees every day and now I Own a Delonghi Primadonna Elite coffee machine. If you stop buying two coffees every day, you will save £1150 in a year! I cut out the blueberry muffin too and now I Walk past the bakery every morning in my Christian Louboutin heels. Cutting out a £2.00 muffin every day will see your wallet grow by an extra £460 then rapidly diminish when you realise you can afford an amazing pair of kicks! I stopped buying a juice every morning and now I Eat an apple every morning as I walk to work in my new Gieves Hawkes suit. Dropping the daily £4.00 cup will allow you to pick up a brand new £920 getup. I stopped buying overpriced salads for lunch and now I Am holidaying in Australia for a month over Christmas. Saying no to the £8.00 sweet potato and feta salad could give you an extra £1,840 to spend on travelling the world! I stopped buying sushi for lunch and now I Carry my homemade sandwiches in a real Louis Vuitton handbag. If you curb your tendency to splash out on a fresh sushi lunch pack every day, you could be the owner of a flash handbag with a £2,300 price tag. I stopped buying pre-made fruit salads and chocolate cake at 3pm and now I.. Have The X Factor playing on my brand new 3D television every Sunday night while I bake some homemade cookies. Okay, okay, Ill stop there. Final thoughts I am in no way endorsing not eating as a means to affording luxury items; Im simply suggesting that maybe brunch on the weekend isnt actually so detrimental to us millennials, as long as we do away with weekday wastage and revert to a home-packed lunch like the good ol days.
